serving NYC
What is a birth doula?
A doula is a non-clinical person who supports another person’s transition through a major life experience. Birth doulas are present at births to offer emotional and physical support. They create a space where birthing people feel supported to advocate for the standard of care they deserve.
Birth doulas often achieve this environment by facilitating conversations with main care providers so birthing people can make informed choices, empowering birthing people to make decisions in the interest of their own physical and emotional well-being, and offering movement and positioning options that encourage birthing people to alleviate unnecessary tension or pain.
Who am I as a birth doula?
I’m a birth doula with a background in movement and advocacy. Birth is work, but it is not a time to suffer. My role as a birth doula is to find ways to ease unnecessary discomfort caused by something happening inside your body (muscular tension, baby’s positioning), something happening inside your mind (anxiety, emotional distress), or something happening in the space (people, smells, sounds).
I don’t shy away from a good chance to emotionally release through laughing, crying, yelling, or whatever else bodies do in the face of….birthing a freakin child. At a birth, I always bring essential oils, heating pouches, incredible snacks, and a commitment to showing up prepared to support the needs of your unique birth.
Why am I a birth doula?
I’m a birth doula because supporting transformation is central to our longevity. The tempo of this planet’s existence is one of constant shifting, constant letting go, constant birth. To deem these moments as solo activities, as just challenges to endure, does a disservice to a world grounded in evolution. These are moments to witness, to care for, and to love. Transitions can be hard, but they should not be equated with suffering.
Transformations require flourishing systems of support; they don’t have to happen alone. I feel called to guide people back to their natural rhythms in those moments. If I can be one piece of someone’s support system as they give birth, then I will have uplifted the rhythm of this planet.
